Amelia: Movie Review

Posted by Megan On December - 3 - 2009

There are two peculiar (yet unfortunate) trends that are popping up on Hollywood mainstream films the past few years. First, is the remake. Films from the past that have proven successful are repackaged for the modern viewer. Sadly, as most of you would have noticed, almost all of these remakes are sub par compared to their older brethren. The second trend is the biopic in which a certain life of a famous (or infamous) person of the past is tackled. It seems as though that writers are running out of new ideas. Either that or most of these film companies just want to cash in on what is “in”. We would like to believe the former is happening. “Amelia” intrigues us not because it is about Amelia Earhart but more so that it feels like her daring life won’t be justified by a film and a haphazard decision for who decided to make this. We really hope “Amelia” will prove us wrong. Read on to find out people should fly away from “Amelia”.

“Amelia” starts off on July 2, 1937. Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) is on the last leg of her second attempt to go around the world. With her is navigator, Fred Noonan (Christopher Eccleston), considered to be the best of his class. Flashbacks of Amelia’s life is shown throughout the film. We see her amazement at seeing a plane fly as a young child and the event wherein she was recruited by business tycoon George Putnam (Richard Gere) to write a book. After being the first woman to cross the Atlantic, Earhart never looked back as she becomes one of the most famous women personalities the world has ever known.

As expected, “Amelia” was not able to give justice to Amelia Earhart’s remarkable life – not even one bit. Worse, the way they depicted the America’s Sweetheart of the Skies was a frustrating experience and on some cases may have even tarnished her image. There was really nothing worth showing as the movie feels like it was not created to inspire viewers but just to cash in on Amelia’s story. For a biopic, it lacks substance and development. Instead, it focused on too many specific dates with flashback upon flashback detailing tidbits on her life – talk about boring! This is nothing different from just reading a summarized chronology of events from a book right? We also do not get why the movie gave much attention on her affair with another man – it destroyed our clean image of Amelia and it did not even help in developing the overall plot. Hillary Swank did the best she could, while there was nothing commendable with Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor’s performance. Too bad they had to bring Amelia’s Earhart story to life – not only was it dragging but we absolutely did not pick anything good from it.

Rating: 1 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- old footage may be worth a shot for some
- flying scenes are inspiring on some level
- Hilary Swank makes a great Amelia Earhart impersonation

Why you shouldn’t watch it:
- dull, slow and boring – definitely wasn’t able to do away from the usual “blandness” of biographies and maybe even worse
- won’t exactly give you a deeper insight on the aviation icon, Amelia Earhart

FANTASTIC MR. FOX: The Film Babble Blog Review

Posted by David On December - 2 - 2009

FANTASTIC MR. FOX

Dir. Wes Anderson, 2009)

The highly detailed microcosms that Wes Anderson crafts (think the theatrical productions of Max Fischer in RUSHMORE, the family townhouse in THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, the cross section of Steve Zissou’s research submarine The Belafonte in THE LIFE AQUATIC, et al) fit perfectly into the storybook world of Roald Dahl in this film that more than does its title justice. The stop motion technique may at first glance strike one as primitive in these days of CGI saturation but the results aren’t disjointed they’re jaunty and full of life.

A slick, quick talking George Clooney voices Mr. Fox, a chicken thief turned newspaper columnist, who secretly returns to a life of crime defying a promise he made to his wife (Meryl Streep). Mr. Fox targets farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean: “One short, one fat, one lean. These horrible crooks, so different in looks, were nonetheless equally mean” as Dahl described and the film quotes in its opening. Mr. Fox’s son, voiced by Anderson regular Jason Schwartzman, is struggling to be noticed at school when he finds himself in the shadow of his visiting cousin Kristofferson (Eric Chase Anderson) but they bond when getting wind of Fox’s 3 phase heist plan.

With the aid of a wacky opossum named Kylie (Wally Wolodarsky), Mr. Fox pulls off his thieving schemes evoking the murderous wrath of the furious farmers who destroy his tree home forcing Fox and family to plough deep into the earth’s surface to escape. Fox’s tail gets shot off in the initial attack but it does little to discourage his plucky determination and cunning charm. The marvelous mix of quirky characters includes Willem Dafoe as a slimy security guard rat, Jarvis Cocker as a human hippy protest singer named Petey, with a few more Anderson regulars – Owen Wilson and Bill Murray as Coach Skip and a badger lawyer respectively rounding out the cast.

Anderson’s knack for setting the beats and tone with an eclectic blend of music from American standards to British rock ‘n roll pays off grandly here with composer Alexandre Desplat’s fine score filling in the rest. The Beach Boys “Heroes and Villains” (from “Smiley Smile” not Brian Wilson’s recent re-recording of “Smile”) works wonderfully in the punchy title sequence as does The Rolling Stones’ immortal “Street Fighting Man” in a chase scene set piece.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX is a clever, funny, and fiercely intelligent film. With endearing style and grace it successfully welds the warmth of an old-school children’s book sensibility with the hip humor of new-school speaking rhythms. It’s the least pretentious and possibly the most accessible of Anderson’s ouvre but it’s so much more than that; Wes’s witty and wise Fox concoction is an instant classic.

TV Bites: Introducing Nicole Richie, ABC Sitcom Star

Posted by David On December - 1 - 2009

NicoleRichie225.jpg· The less-annoying half of The Simple Life cast is returning to primetime with her very own ABC sitcom. Nicole Richie came up with the original idea for the show — a professional woman with complicated family relationships struggles to figure out what role she’ll take as her life and her family evolve — and will receive a producing credit. Warren Bell (According to Jim) is attached to executive produce and Daisy Gardner (Californication) is set to pen the series. [Variety]

CBS dumps Three Rivers from its Sunday roster, another Saved By the Bell alum is freed into the unemployment pool, and more TV Bites after the jump.

Avril Lavigne: Photo Shoot Foxy

Posted by David On December - 1 - 2009

Getting used to the single life once more, Avril Lavigne was spotted out for a photo shoot in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon (November 30).

Not far removed from her split from ex-hubby Deryck Whibley, the “Sk8ter Boy” singer strutted into the studio while getting some help from her brother Matthew when her hot black zippered pants created some discomfort.

According to a source on the scene, Matthew kept a very close eye on his younger sister, making sure she didn’t reveal too much when she unzipped her pants to tuck them into her waist.

The sighting comes after rumors of a random hookup for Miss Lavigne during a recent trip to NYC, which follows reports that she was getting cozy with Wilmer Valderrama.

Of the situation, an insider told Life & Style, “They have been friends since working together on Fast Food Nation in 2005, but things heated up last month. One of their first dates was Oct. 29 at Nobu in West Hollywood.”

Halfway House: Kristen Stewart Has a Sh** Life, Okay?

Posted by David On November - 30 - 2009

Halfway through the day, pause a movie halfway through. What do you see?

Every life choice has its ups and downs. So goes the life of the actressexual. If you champion and obsess over actresses as I have since I was a little boy then every, oh, three to five years you will experience the superstar rise of an actress that you find unsupportable and that you wish the rest of the world would get over. Behold my 2007-2010 model: Kristen Stewart.

53 minutes into Adventureland, Kristen craps on Jesse

Jesse Eisenberg: I think you’re incredible.
[pause. inhale]

Kristen Stewart: There’s a lot of shit in my life.

I’m not ready for this…

There are many reasons to hate Kristen Stewart so she didn’t really need to add taking a dump on adorabnoxious Jesse Eisenberg’s dreams to the list. Since the Twilight movies have taken over the world, we will surely be seeing Kristen Stewart in dozens of movies over the next 5 or 6 years. She’ll be in demand for every role for a twentysomething.

I’m not ready for this.

How will I tell one character from the next what will all the shoulder shrugging, painful intakes of breath, hair stroking, and general twitchiness that define every Stewart performance? Someone help me see things differently because I know I’ll be seeing a lot of her. What am I missing? Please tell me that she’ll at least play Joan Jett differently than this because I really want to enjoy The Runaways next year. I love Joan Jett. And I don’t really remember her as the mopey, shrugging, self-loathing sort that Stewart specializes in.

So, no wonder that Eisenberg runs to the arms of “Lisa P” (Margarita Levieva) in Adventureland. Anything to break the monotony of Kristen’s mannered & mopey miserabilism. As for the movie itself, I’m glad that some people found it so moving and worthwhile but I felt largely indifferent to it, though I did admire its partial commitment to languid summer moods and the tiny sparks of humor. And I liked Lisa P and her bestie dance partner Kelly. Loved the T-shirts, too. And the Giant Ass Panda. I’d pro’lly cheat to win one of those, too.
