oscarssy.jpgWhatever you may think of AMPAS’s decision to expand the number of Best Picture nominees to ten, it’s hard to deny it’s brought a jolt of excitement to Oscar jockeying. Unfortunately, it’s also come with a few murky problems attached, including the realization that with such a vast number of nominees, the Best Picture winner could potentially be chosen by less than 20% of voters.

Paula Abdul Hints at Vegas Variety Show

Posted by David On August - 31 - 2009

paulaabdulred2.jpgIn the weeks since Paula Abdul tweet-dumped American Idol, she agreed to host VH1′s Divas Live and scored a recurring gig as Judge Paula Abdul (seriously) on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, but our dreams for an all-Paula network program went unanswered. Until last night, when the former Idol judge confirmed another kind of Abdul-spectacular: her very own Las Vegas variety show! Abdul’s hazy details after the jump!

On TV: Youth Knows No Pain

Posted by David On August - 31 - 2009

youth-knows-no-pain_rev_top.jpgJust so we’re clear, Mitch McCabe’s gripping, grotesque plastic surgery documentary Youth Knows No Pain (premiering tonight on HBO) is not quite about plastic surgery. Nor is it really about the “anti-aging industry,” the designated euphemism for the $60 billion subculture comprising said surgeries, wrinkle creams, injectables, implanatables and numerous other treatments used to preserve Americans’ illusion of freshness, fitness and vigor. Rather, Youth is about the dynamics of vanity — particularly that of its filmmaker, who, along with so many of her subjects, seems too preoccupied with fending off age to contemplate that she’s old enough to know better.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

Posted by David On August - 31 - 2009

A bit invasion, a bit disaster movie, a bit silly (much like Jennifer Connelly’s fringe). I haven’t seen the original, but this is definitely Hollywood selling out with style over substance. Hollow blockbuster.

3 stars

Bad Boys 3 AND Rambo 5!

Posted by David On August - 31 - 2009

This awesome news comes from Moviehole…

Umpteen years after co-star Joe Pantoliano told Moviehole’s Clint Morris (who is knee-deep in film work at the moment, hence yours unruly getting to make it with the keyboard) if there’s ever a “Bad Boys 3″ – and he didn’t sound confident – that he’ll likely be so old he’ll be acting from a wheelchair, The Hollywood Reporter has announced plans for said second sequel. (And that clinking sound is the faint murmur of Joey Pants’ buckled wheelchair tyres as he wheels down to the Sony offices… pen in hand).

In all seriousness (in other words, Joey still has the use of his legs), nobody – not even headline-acts Will Smith and Martin Lawrence – has officially signed for “Bad Boys 3″ yet, but Sony are happy for the trades to announce that the flick is in the cards. Ideally, the studio would love to get Michael Bay back to direct… but that too is up-in-the-air. The only certainty is that Peter Craig is writing the screenplay. Oh, and that it’ll likely feature lots of flipping cars, explosions and cussing. And maybe a sexy female lead. Oh, and maybe Joey Pants.

And speaking of sequels, Nu Image/Millennium has officially announced “Rambo 5″ – which will again be directed by it’s star, Sylvester Stallone.

As previously rumored, the new film will be set on American soil. Variety says the “storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border. Production will start in the spring.”

And I’m assuming Rambo’s father will feature in this one? And if so, can he please be played by Brian Dennehy? (wouldn’t that be the shizzle!?)
