Fancying Hugh Dancy

Posted by David On July - 31 - 2009

It’s Nathaniel (not quite back yet) just popping in to point you to this week’s Towleroad column in which I swoon for Hugh Dancy despite having insufficient interest in his new picture, Adam.

Have you seen the shameless TV spot for the movie? It opens by declaring him an Oscar contender for Best Actor and then cuts immediately to Adam explaining that he has Asperger’s Syndrome. Way to sell stereotypes, marketing team. “Watch this movie! Mental disorders = Oscar Gold!”

In real life Hugh Dancy is still hooked up with Claire Danes. In the movie he’s fallen for Rose Byrne (sans Glenn Close). But in my dreamworld he’s still macking on Patrick Wilson — the most exciting moment in Evening (2007) by an incalculably large margin — or having threesomes with Julianne Moore or…

What? Shut up.

ZG225.jpgDuring yesterday’s Bored to Death panel and subsequent interview opportunities, the Television Critics Association proved that they are more interested in Zach Galifianakis’ recent box office successes than talking about the new HBO comedy. While co-stars Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman (via satellite from Toronto, where he is shooting Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and quirky series creator, Jonathan Ames sat idly, The Hangover actor struggled to come up with one-liners to downplay his recent riches. There are worse problems to have.

Goode Versus Evil

Posted by David On July - 31 - 2009

Goode225.jpgABC’s summer animation series The Goode Family should be funnier than it is. America is in a liberal mood these days, and the moral excesses of the left-wing are low-hanging fruit for right-wing pundits. If Rush Limbaugh can entertain millions with harsh commentary about Democrats, then a group of seasoned Hollywood writers should be able to do the same thing. Still, it’s Friday, and you’ll be midway through a sixer by the time the show comes on.

The Pre-Taped 2009 Emmys: A Sneak Preview

Posted by David On July - 31 - 2009

In order to reinvigorate a turgid, audience-shedding Emmys telecast, the TV Academy has announced a controversial decision to pre-tape the presentation of 8 of the ceremony’s 28 awards (changes which are expected to disproportionately affect writers, directors, and cable networks) prior to the live show and run edited footage of these presentations during the live show, hoping to reclaim 12 to 15 precious moments of primetime for the networks who so selflessly donate their resources to the celebration of television’s greatest talents. If all goes according to the Academy’s plan, the show’s ratings, lately in freefall, will surge, and the broadcast networks will wrest back some of the spotlight from basic-cable competitors who have too long been dominating the Emmys due to an unfair advantage in “quality” and “dedication to storytelling.”

Confused about how this radical change to the show will play out? Movieline is here to show you what to expect when you half-heartedly flip over to CBS on the evening of Sept. 20th, hoping to get a glimpse of nominee Jon Hamm’s jawline before quickly returning to your favorite multiple-birth-related docudrama on TLC.

Posted by David On July - 31 - 2009

It’s always exciting to hear about upcoming celebrity weddings, and the latest one is Mark Wahlberg.

The “Fear” actor is set to marry his girlfriend of 8 years, Rhea Durham, tomorrow (August 1) at the Good Shephard Catholic Church in Beverly Hills.

A source tells press, “It’s going to be a small and intimate event, with just close family, including their kids.” Wahlberg and Durham have three children together.

Of the marriage, a confident Mark says, “I finally feel like we’re ready to take the step and we’ll have success.”
